Archie and the Poet - 2023

Sir John Betjeman, a former resident of Uffington, was introduced to Archie as a small
child, from which time they became firm companions. Archie accompanied Sir John
just about everywhere throughout his life and, as can be seen by the number of
patches holding Archie together, it is evident he is a well-loved teddy bear. Whilst at
Oxford in the 1920s, Sir John and Archie provided the inspiration for Sebastian Flyte
and Aloysius in Evelyn Waugh’s novel Brideshead Revisited. During his lifetime, Sir
John gave Archie a number of different personas, including non-conformist minister
and amateur archaeologist. Archie was in Sir John’s arms when he died in 1984.
